Abstract

Co-design, an integral practice in design research, has evolved significantly in recent years. This paper offers a practice-led reflection of distributed co-design through two decades of intergenerational projects, from early challenges to its current state, using temporal structure, technology mediation, and participation structure as interdependent lenses of inquiry. It defines the terms distributed, online, and remote as orthogonal dimensions of co-design practice. The paper concludes by supporting practice-led reflection as a way to reveal structural patterns of a generative-evaluative spectrum that contemporaneous empirical work cannot see.
