IxD&A Journal has been established in 2005 from an idea and by the will of Carlo Giovannella as a paper journal of critical in-depth studies with an interdisciplinary character, addressed to researchers and professionals.

In 2007 with issue N. 3/4, also due to the difficulties of covering the costs of a paper publication with a popular, albeit high-profile, slant, it became a scientific journal, and for a few years, until the end of 2010, it published the proceedings of a few scientific conferences.

In 2011 with issue N. 11/12, IxD&A definitively embraced the web and became electronic (the paper publication became on-demand) implementing the Gold open Access Road to its content. A cutting-edge choice for the times, since almost all scientific journals did not allow free access to the published content. A choice dictated also by the conviction that cultural progress is strongly accelerated by the free circulation of ideas and that everyone should have the opportunity to disseminate their ideas and achievements in high-profile scientific journals without having to face economic barriers.
From 2011 onwards, all issues have been dedicated to frontier topics capable to make interact the fields of design, information technology and education with a focus on social implications.

In the autumn of 2012, IxD&A began to be published continuously on a quarterly basis and in a short time reached such a high level of appreciation internationally that in 2015 it was indexed by Scopus and Web of Science (Scopus then, start to perform a back-indexing up to issue 3/4 that, available since April 2023).

Over time, IxD&A did not cease to serve as a communicative and experimental platform aimed at fostering free exchange, the intertwining of expertise, and the development of a community of high-profile innovators, so in 2020, also due to the pandemic, on the occasion of Issue 47 it inaugurates the series of free access online events “Meet the Authors” (MtA), in which authors succinctly present their published works and give rise to a free discussion.
On this occasion, IxD&A inaugurates its own video channel on Youtube, where video recordings of MtA events are distributed, also with the hope of bringing young people closer to scientific literature.

Keeping pace with technological developments, also from Issue N. 47, IxD&A started to issue blockchain-anchored electronic certificates to the authors involved in the MtA events.

In autumn 2021, 50 published issues are reached.

In 2022 it becomes a Q1 level journal in the Design/Architecture field and, as well, the first Italian journal in the rankings of all sectors of reference: Design/Architecture, Media Technology, Social Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science Application, Education.
