Overview

Maps have been used for centuries to coordinate a wide-range of human activities, to help explorers and armies to chart unknown and foreign lands and seas, to present information, and even to shape our imagination of the past and vision of the future. In our modern digital world, the role of maps has increased many folds, and maps in their various forms have become an underlying platform for countless tools, applications, visualizations, games, and other interactive systems, interfaces, and modes of interaction.
Despite this increasing importance, and perhaps due to its transdisciplinary nature, research on map design, development, evaluation, and use is currently dispersed across many different disciplines and their specific publications, with hardly any of them focusing on maps as a basis for interfaces and interactions. This special issue aims to highlight the role of maps as a physical, theoretical, and metaphorical framework for interaction design and architecture. It provides a forum for the presentation of different perspectives in this emerging research area.

Topics of Interest

This special issue focuses on research related to the development of novel future map-based designs in different fields, including interaction design, user interface design, visualization, visual design, geographical information systems and cartography. The topics of interests include the following, as well as any other related topic:

  • Design of map-based interfaces and interactions
  • Theories, principles and practices of map-based interfaces and interactions
  • User evaluations of map-based interfaces and interactions
  • Applications of map-based interfaces and interactions
  • Reviews of research on map-based interfaces and interaction

Submission procedure

All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication.
The manuscripts should be submitted anonymized either in .doc or in .pdf format.
All papers will be blindly peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. Prospective participants are invited to submit a 8-30 pages paper (including authors’ information, abstract, all tables, figures, references, etc.).
The paper should be written according to the IxD&A authors’ guidelines .
